Bamboo
The exotic materials used to create McGuire furniture have long been a symbol of the company. Bamboo has long been part of the McGuire vocabulary, in the form of Bamboo Tables and crushed bamboo of the Faubourg Collection.
McGuire's distinct Bamboo Tables feature bundles of bamboo poles lashed together with the company's signature rawhide laces. The bamboo surrounds a welded iron frame, painted orange-red, the color of the Golden Gate Bridge, in homage to McGuire's San Francisco heritage. The red color is occasionally visible through the irregularity of the bamboo.
To create its famed Bamboo Tables, McGuire imports choice Yellow-Gold, Black-Brown and the rarest, Mottled "Shina Chiku" Bamboo, from Japan and China. The simplicity of bamboo and glass combine to create remarkable, disciplined forms - all designed by John McGuire.
That philosophy of interpreting classic design is clearly articulated with a collection inspired by French Moderne design; as its inspiration, McGuire looked back to the era of the company's founding. Paris in the 1930’s and 40’s was surrounded by villages that became home to some of the most noted modern designers of our time. It was in the French suburbs, or faubourg, that Jean-Michel Frank established his artist workshop. With its introduction of the Faubourg Collection, McGuire pays homage to the legacy of this great designer.
By taking its direction from the French Moderne style, the Faubourg Collection relies on simple, purified forms that, while unadorned, use superb finishing, unusual materials and bold marquetry to create their distinction. Each design pairs the timeless beauty of mahogany with an exotic, crushed bamboo veneer. A rich, dark Chestnut finish creates uniformity between the two materials while revealing the natural beauty of the wood and the growth knuckles of the bamboo.
